Massai Mara - Tribal culture & wildlife
„Mara“ means colourful speckled in the language of the Massai and refers to the variety of the landscape there. Bush and tree savannas with acacia trees and riparian forests span along the Mara River and the quartz containing rocks.
The Maasai Mara has got the highest animal population in Kenya. The Park is named after the Massai, a seminomadic pastoral tribe, who has immigrated in this region about 200 years ago.
During the big animal migration (August/ September) thousands of white-tailed gnus wander along the way from the Serengeti into the Maasai Mara, followed by lions, leopards, hyenas, jackals and antelopes.
Even when the herds leave the Maasai Mara again, which happens lately in November a very high animal population is still there. You‘ll have the best chances to take a picture of the „Big 5“ during the whole year - lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.
